Benefits

Lawn Bowling is a sport with many benefits:

  • Good for all ages, can be a multi-generational family activity
  • Low impact, no contact
  • Keeps your brain and body active
  • Adapts to needs and abilities
  • A sport for life

Lawn bowling takes concentration, precision and accuracy. It can be played by anyone at any age.

(Always check with your health care provider to make sure the activity is the right fit for your health and

wellness needs). Some additional benefits of the sport are:

  • Fitness: improvement of muscle strength, flexibility and endurance;
  • Mental Health: fresh air and exercise for alleviation of depression and anxiety;
  • An increase in problem solving skills and improvements in co-ordination and concentration;
  • Improved confidence, self-esteem and connection to community
  • Improving social skills and gaining a sense of belonging

  • Flexibility

    Flexibility is key for everyday activities. It decreases with age and a non-active lifestyle may contribute to this loss at any age. Lawn Bowlers:

    • Bend to pick up their bowls;
    • Flex their knees to set for delivery;
    • Coordinate movements for smooth delivery and release of the bowl;
    • Bend to place the mat;
    • Get down and up to measure for shot.
  • Balance

    Balance problems can cause some people to become fearful of doing even simple daily activities. They may also avoid movements that are more strenuous or challenging. Over time, pulling back from physical activity can lead to loss of muscle strength and increased frailty may result. The simple movements in lawn bowling help with balance.

    • Managing footwork;
    • Development of balance techniques for the delivery (partial lunge position);
    • Navigating around and between bowls on the green;
    • Repeating the motion of sitting and getting up as the day progresses;
    • Coordinating such actions as setting bowls together for start of an end.
  • Brain Activity

    An active person has an active mind and an active mind helps a person stay active. Lawn bowling helps people to:

    • Maintain social interaction and conversational skills;
    • Focus on the task at hand for those 10 or 15 seconds it takes to deliver a bowl;
    • Think about the precision that goes into playing the game well (at any level);
    • Problem solve – looking at the position of bowls and strategizing where the next shot(s) should be placed.
  • Adapts to Needs and Abilities

    Lawn bowling can be played by the very young and very old, and everything in between. Bowls are available in many sizes, from very small to accommodate the youngest bowlers, to narrow profile bowls with larger grooves to improve grip for smaller adult or arthritic hands, and a full range up to the largest and heaviest bowls. There is additional equipment to assist those that do not have as much flexibility to crouch down in their delivery (much like in curling), and the sport can be modified for those with special needs such as the visually impaired. For those who may not have the endurance to play a full day in tournaments, there are plenty of options for single game play during the weekly schedule. And if your daytimes are full, there are also evening jitneys.
